The scene of the crime...

A close up to what happened. The maroon arrow shows the path of the Camry wagon. The green arrow is what I did. I think my swerve was much sharper than what I have depicted in the diagram...

In typical fashion, I was listening to 92.9 ABC Classic FM, my usual morning listening. I wasn’t speeding. The time was about 7.57am – it was right before the news.

I had just turned right into… and as you do, you speed up to hit the speed limit. There was a light blue Camry wagon, probably a 1990's model. There was a massive 4WD behind me. I wasn’t even tailgating.

Suddenly the car in front of me swerves left without even indicating. It doesn’t even hit within 4 metres of the left kerb. (For those in other countries – we drive on the left her ein Australia). Then, again without indicating, swerves to make a U-Turn right in the path of my driving! ARGH!

WTF?!?! Was the guy half asleep?

Luckily for me, I wasn’t. I just let my normal intuition react to the situation. Thinking back, I remember thinking in a split second whether or not I should brake hard or swerve. Then I remembered that it was slippery since it had just rained lightly. So I chose to swerve heavily to the right as soon as the other car started for the right. Thinking about it now, why didn’t I s swerve left?

That was another split second decision I made. I didn’t swerve left? There wasn’t enough space. If I had veered left there wasn’t enough room to brake and I would have clipped the Camry and I would have banked the curve and hit the light pole.

Thank God the 4WD wasn't tailing me otherwise there would have been a three car pile

So this is what happened. I saw the Camry in front of me veer left without indicating veer left without indicating as if the driver was parking. In my mind I say, ok, that’s fine – next time why don’t you indicate your intentions? Then a the car just paused for a second then started to do a u turn – I beeped my horn continuously while I made those decisions above – everything just started to go in slow motion at this point… I veered right until I reached the other end of the street (the street was quite wide) and then it drove parallel to the right kerb and drove safely to a halt. I remember when it was all going in slow motion – my horn was going and that image of the other car’s bonnet being just a few centimeters away. That was freaky.

So I parked. Then a school girl popped out of the Camry that nearly swiped me off the road. I thought about pursuing the matter – but I think it wouldn’t do me any good – so I went on my journey to Canley Vale station…

Hmmm…. That was a close one.
