The Internet is today's version of the wild west. There are outlaws running amuck and there is no true internet-wide policing jurisdiction. The young people of today are the pioneers of this brand new digital world. Technology is moving and evolving rapidly. Check out Bill Gates in 1985. Problems that are plaguing the internet wild west at the moment are figuring out the rules and regulations of human communication over this artificial electronic technology. People are testing the boundaries of the frontier everyday. Law precedents are being set worldwide.
The internet wild west is a vast expanse. Even after recent times when the global network exploded to be accessible to the mainstream public about 15 to 20 years ago the frontier is continually being tested. More recently, there was a first-time case with a 15 year old schoolboy in Finland being ordered to pay $1,000 in damages for "causing harm and suffering," and $3,000 in court costs for simply posting up a video on YouTube of his teacher singing karaoke without her permission and claiming she was a lunatic. But the court said Vesikko's actions "falsified facts" — about the institution and the teacher's mental state — and caused her to suffer anxiety, depression and insomnia. The video, which Vesikko called in English "Karaoke of the mental hospital," named the teacher and said she was "a lunatic singing at the karaoke of the mental hospital." The Nurmes court found that the video had become "very well known and public" after its release, both in school and regionally, and could be accessed internationally. It said that publishing it caused added anguish to the teacher, who had already been teased by pupils for about two years, according to her own account.
