Let's start off with central Sydney, a hot tourist place - The Rocks. Here's how you get connected for free:

The service allows anyone located indoors or outdoors within The Rocks’ Wi-Fi hotspot – between Sydney Harbour Bridge and Circular Quay – to access the high speed wireless connection for 30 minute blocks.

It’s a perfect way to check up on local dining, entertainment and accommodation options as well as arts and cultural events and local tours in the precinct at The Rocks’ new-look website.

Five easy steps to get connected to The Rocks Hotspot:
1. Turn on your laptop, plug in your Wi-Fi card or turn on Wi-Fi in your laptop (refer to your computer user manual for details).
2. Search for available wireless networks and connect to ‘The Rocks Hotspot’.
3. Open your internet browser.
4. Enter your details.
5. Read the ‘Terms and Conditions of Use’ and accept.

hi, I'm glad that I've found your blog with this very helpful information on wi-fi hotspots.

Me and some colleagues are also researching on this plan of NSW govenment that is to implant free wi-fi hotspots city wide in Sydney. Your info has been a great help.

We are actaully projecting a future scenario of where City wide wireless connection with integrated personal devices will replace mobile phones with free web phone, traffic congestion will be resolved...etc. but of course there are always arguments and problems that we should notice, such as whether wi-fi can really replace 3G or the upcoming 4G network since the telecommunication companies are earning money from it.
Anyway, it is really helpful reading ur articles. It would be great if you can come visit our blog and leave some comments. Thanks!

p.s. we are also university students who are studying architecture. =D

Thanks! Happy to be of service :)

It would be fantastic if the Sydney CBD had free wireless: I can get out of the office and enjoy the wide open spaces.

Imagine... blogging while in the beautiful Sydney Botanical gardens. (yeah yeah I know, I can do that already - but hey free WiFi is better)
