Mercy Ministries Scandal

Disappointing. To see an institution linked with the Christian community to be smeared in the public media - yet again (again? Hillsong already has a controversial regard following mainstream publicity in Current Affairs TV programs). This time its a scandal involving Mercy Ministries:

A SECRETIVE ministry with direct links to Gloria Jean's Coffees and the Hillsong Church has been deceiving troubled young women into signing over months of their lives to a program that offers scant medical or psychiatric care, instead using Bible studies and exorcisms to treat mental illness.

Government agencies such as Centrelink have also been drawn into the controversy, as residents are required to transfer their benefits to Mercy Ministries. There are also allegations that the group receives a carers payment to look after the young women.

It's sad really. Women who are in a real deep need of psychological/medical help are just given the bible for "medication". In this day an age? This stuff is still happening. The bible can help. Yes. But should not be the primary solution for people who are in the most dire of needs. The holy bible's teachings can be used effectively together with known medical solutions through medication and psychological treatment. Such programs like Mercy Ministries give the Christian faith and its teachings a bad name.

Mercy Ministries maintains a MySpace presence and a website - both professionally done - both websites give me the impression that when you sign up you will get helpful medical treatment. The But according to this indepth report by Ruth Pollard from Sydney Morning Herald they simply aren't.

My daughter went to Mercy and prior to that almost died while receiving "medical" and "psychological" care. She was inpatient on 3 different occasions and the 3rd time was discharged and I was told NOT to bring her back because they could not help her. I was advised that 10% of girls with eating disorders die and she was likely one of those. So thats what kind of medical and psychogical treatment she received. Thank god she found Mercy on her own and they help her to see that she is beautiful and to know her own self worth and purpose in life. They basically saved her life. I think god for them!!!!

Girls are not "sent" to Mercy, or deceived into going. It is completely voluntary, only up to the girl. It is very clear from the beginning of the application process that Mercy is a deeply biblical-based treatment center. In fact, they will not accept girls who are in need of serious medical treatment,as they cannot provide such. Mercy has saved the lives of countless girls who have been in and out of "helpful medical treatment" centers and through multiple psychologists and medications, all of which either failed, kicked the girl out when insurance ran out, or gave up on the girl. Because of Mercy, my beautiful best friend is alive and overflowing with hope, joy, and confidence.

Mercy Ministries is a blessed ministry that uses biblical principles to help young women in need. An for the record, they have professional, spirit-filed psychiatrists who provide services to these young women. I have heard the testimonies of young women who have totally been transformed because of the Lord using Mercy Ministries. And to whomever started this LIE on this ministry, I am praying for God's mercy to be upon you, and that you would repent of your sins, and give your life to Jesus. Mercy Ministries and her entire staff are doing an excellent job!!! Thanks!

What? They clearly say that it is a ministry . Well this is ignorant . It is called Mercy Ministries. You know when you go that it is a "ministry". I know this article was probably posted by some intellectual who probably finds it exhilarating to smear something in Christians faces. So are Christians really the ones doing the persecuting these days or is it everyone else persecuting the Christians. Just because you are distressed that a Christian facility has been able to help these girls better than some government run facility where they go right back into the same crap doesn't give you the right to post libel and slander. They clearly speak of God as a focus on their website.

The secretive Mercy Ministries have finally shutdown in Australia so they can no longer offer fake biblical 'cures' to real psychological problems. This is wonderful news indeed.

I went to Mercy and the staff weren't qualified. There were no psychologists or real counselors. They wouldn't let me call my family or talk to them privately when I was unhappy there. They tried to cast "evil spirits" out of me and that's all the counseling was. I'm a Christian and I expected the counseling to be biblical but I didn't think they'd force the evil spirit casting out sessions on us who were there. I wouldn't recommend them to anyone who needs medical help or psychological help. You're be better off going to see a doctor or somebody who's qualified like a psychologist or counselor. There are Christian counselors that you can see without going to Mercy and they're qualified with actual college degrees.

Marco, those women choose to be there. The founder knew that working with the government to help women like this did not help. Knowing that a loving God does. There is a reason why there are so many success stories. Stop trying to put down a place that has helped so many women find hope and a future.

This actually REALLY pisses me off. I went to countless secular treatment centers to get help for my issues. None of it helped. Then I went to Mercy. You can't be forced to go; it has to be a completely voluntary decision. While there, they taught me how to live.... what REAL life is about. And it hurts that some people (obviously you) are hurting so badly to diss something that is trying to help someone. I am not going against secular treatment centers or anything. Some things help certain people, others do not. Who are you (or am I) to judge something to devoting their life to helping others?

This is a lie and everything that is said in this article is not the truth. I am a graduate of Mercy Ministries and we are NOT deceived into going, they provide medical care in the way that they provide you a way to go see medical professionals if in need, the pregnant residents don't just deliver in home, they see a midwife throughout the pregnancy and deliver in hospital. The girls have to WANT to be there, and ready to accept help in order to even get in. It has to be the girl's decision. They express that often so that if there are girls there that want to leave they are free to leave, because there are many more girls waiting to get in that DO want to be there. These allegations against Mercy are a BLATANT LIE!!!!!! I pray that the person supplying these allegations pray for forgiveness because God is changing these girls lives and you are trying to prevent that. God have mercy on those in your way!

I went through a LONG process of interviewing to work with Mercy Ministries a while back! They take their ministry VERY serious and they are dedicated to every single young lady that walks through their doors. It is a voluntary step in recovery and the process is very effective! These girls who choose to come to Mercy Ministries are given not only medical care, but they are given truth! Truth that the world has deprived them of. The truth that they are beautiful, the truth that they are valuable. The truth that GOD loves them. And when the world has given them messages that they are anything less than that, that truth WITH the assistance of the medical...produces amazing and life changing results!

Anyone who would choose to mock or belittle a ministry that is making such a diffence in young ladies lives should be ashamed!

I do not work there because I was offered another job during the process, but I would be absolutely honored to be a part of Mercy!

I'm so sorry to read this article because I know first-hand what an incredible ministry Mercy provides. My best A went to Mercy several years ago after numerous unsuccessful psychiatric and medical treatments. I am a psychologist who has studied their ministry plan and feel tremendously comfortable with the Biblically-based treatment. Unfortunately, without gathering all the necessary information it seems that you have not truly seen the real ministry of Mercy. I would also advise that if you plan to write articles of this nature, check your grammar and spelling so you do not look more ignorant than you already sound.

It is too bad really that people don't know what kind of mistreatment goes on in "civilian" psychiatric facilities. I have been inpatient 7 times and have tried to kill myself three times. I have also received ECT treatments which took away some of my long term memory and effects my short term memory on a daily basis. The ECT was traumatic, and I was abused emotionally in the hospital that administered them by the nurses who saw themselves quite obviously "above" the patients. I found this attitude at four different facilities I stayed at, and I have stayed in five different places total. I can't tell you how traumatized I was, and it was not because I was depressed. It was clearly because of the reason I already gave, and because some people put themselves in positions of "authority" because they enjoy having and abusing that authority over others less fortunate than they. What finally saved me from myself was the Bible, and biblical teaching. I have never been to Mercy Ministries, but I do know the power in the word of God to change lives because it is alive. God's word is life to those who read it and believe it. It was God's word that brought all things into creation, and it was God's word that sent the holy spirit to impregnate a virgin so God himself could come to earth and teach us of his love for us and his forgiveness. Again, the word of God is life, and it is power and it is healing. It is you who are ignorant. It is the world and those like you that wants to label people with psychiatric labels because they do not know the truth so it can feel self-important and wiser than God about things they don't understand. But there is none wiser than God and nothing so powerful as his word.

I also am a graduate of Mercy Ministries and am proud to say so. In no way was I forced to go to Mercy or forced to stay there. I overcame issues that secular treatment told me I would always have to deal with. Now I'm finally able to enjoy life. All of the teaching I received there was founded on biblical principles that, as a Christian, I know to be appropriate. Going to Mercy was the best decision of my life.
