With a lineup of French actors Christian Clavier and Gérard Depardieu (who stars in nearly every French film I've seen) and the Italian Actor Roberto Benigni from La Vita è bella or better known as Life is Beautiful - Asterix and Obelix vs. Caesar (or in French Astérix et Obélix contre César made in 1999) was an amusing translation of the Asterix comic series onto the silverscreen.

I've never picked up a copy of the Asterix comic series, it was there in my primary school library (back in the old days), I knew other people that borrowed it but the picture of a small wiry fellow with a hat with wings and a fat bloke beside him never did appeal to me. Christian Clavier stars as Asterix and Gérard Depardieu stars as his sidekick Obelix. The molding of real-life actors to model cartoon characters was well done. Special effects was used sparingly but very effectively. In some movies special effects are sometimes overused and if the movie has a low budget it is very apparent in the quality of the special effect - in this movie all the effects were well done.

Also of note is the actress Laetitia Casta starring as Falbala - Obelix's love interest in the movie Asterix and Obelix vs. Caesar. Laetitia Casta is a well known Sports Illustrated model. Interesting to see she has transitioned from modelling to doing films.

 

With a dog called Dogmatix and another character called Getafix the plot of this Asterix movie is revoles around the well-known little village from the Asterix and Obelix - comic books is in trouble: It is the last place not controlled by Rome. When Tax collector Claudius Incorruptus does not get his money from the villagers, Julius Caesar himself comes to the place to see what's so special about their resistance. A special magic potion, prepared by the village's druid, gives incredible power to those who drink it. And Obelix, who fell into the pot as a child has been invincible ever since. With the help of Tullius Destructivus, an intrigeur, the Romans try to get Obelix and the druid into their hands in order to wipe the little village off the map, when the last potion of it's stock has been used up. But each individual also has some plans of his own
