Telephone - Lady Gaga Music Video Clip

Lady Gaga has released a music video clip of her song Telephone which is over 9 minutes long and features Beyonce Knowles. Within 12 hours of the video being released on the internet it had half a million hits and nearly as many blogs dissecting its possible meanings. Lady Gaga has said the video had been inspired by Quentin Tarantino's films.

"There's certainly always a hidden message in my music videos," she said. "I'm always trying to convolute everyone's idea of what a pop-music video should be." Early in the clip, there's a scene set in a prison yard featuring a lesbian snog between a butch lesbian dressed in leather and Lady Gaga, who is wearing a pair of sunglasses constructed from burning cigarettes.

Ella Fitzgerald's music is awesome. When I discovered her music a long time ago while browsing the selection of CDs at the local public library, I was lucky enough to pick her CD. Below are the two songs that are really memorable to me: Mack The Knife and Let's Call the Whole thing off (duet with Louis Armstrong).

Ella Jane Fitzgerald (April 25, 1917 – June 15, 1996), also known as the "First Lady of Song" and "Lady Ella," was an American jazz vocalist. With a vocal range spanning three octaves, she was noted for her purity of tone, impeccable diction, phrasing and intonation, and a "horn-like" improvisational ability, particularly in her scat singing. She is widely considered one of the supreme interpreters of the Great American Songbook. Over a recording career that lasted 59 years, she was the winner of 13 Grammy Awards and was awarded the National Medal of Art by Ronald Reagan and the Presidential Medal of Freedom by George H. W. Bush.

I was watching Rage on ABC the other week when I heard this song playing: Canvas Bags by Tim Minchin. A little slow to build up but it gets hilarious towards the end. I find that Australia is a little slow to the canvas bag game... we're still using plastic bags at the supermarket. But I guess things are slowly changing... Officeworks don't give out bags anymore and Target is phasing their out.

Hidden Swearing in Music

I was listening to "The Script" album on my ipod when it started playing "If You See Kay". I didn't think of it much until the second time around when I thought - wait a sec - that sounds like they were spelling out F-U-C-K in their chorus. And this phenomenon is not new. A few other bands have played with "hidden swearing" in their music and lyrics by using "If you See Kay". Other bands who have used it include: 2005 Norwegian punk band Turbonegro, 1990 pop-punk band Poster Children, 1982 Canadian band April Wine, 1977 lo-fi pioneer R. Stevie Moore and finally in 1963 Memphis Slim. The funny thing is even Shakespeare played with the concept.

I know this is old but still can't get enough of "the bird bird bird, the bird is the word" - the real song name is: "Surfin' Bird" sung by "The Trashman". Never heard of the song until it got featured in "The Family Guy" in the episode "I dream of Jesus".

I'm tired to listening to the FM radio. In Sydney the popular radio stations of 2DayFM, Triple M, Mix 106.5, WSFM 101.7, 96.1FM and Nova 96.9 FM keep playing the same songs along with those tiresome repetitive radio advertisement jingles. Well, you probably have heard of internet radio, podcasting, having your own tracklists on your ipod, etc... I've written about internet radio stations before. Here I'm looking for free chillout or ambient internet music stations.

One of the better chillout music stations is from the LastFM Chillout channel. The good thing is that you can tell the radio station if you like the track or not. The station is fully customised to what you want. Although they do have quite a large collection of music - they don't have everything.

Before I delve into the Battlestar Galactica Soundtrack, I want to share this wiki page about the religious and mythical references in the show. It is an interesting read if you're a fan. The music of the reimagined Battlestar Galactica is a body of work largely credited to the composers Bear McCreary and Richard Gibbs.

According to the wiki page the soundtrack: "Similar to the music of Star Wars as orchestrated by John Williams, the music of Battlestar Galactica makes use of the technique called "leitmotif". A leitmotif is a phrase or melodic cell that signifies a character, place, plot element, mood, idea, relationship or other specific part of the story. It is commonly used in modern film scoring as a device to mentally anchor certain parts of a film to the soundtrack. Of chief importance for a leitmotif is that it must be strong enough for a listener to latch onto while being flexible enough to undergo variation and development."

Regina Spektor is one of the finest songwriters to emerge from the 2000s. Born in Moscow in 1980, Spektor learned to play the piano at a young age, and began writing songs when she moved from the turbulent Soviet Union to the Bronx in the early 1990s. She was exposed to rock music by her father, who had bootleg cassettes of band such as The Beatles and Queen. She also was influenced by classical artists, such as Chopin. When she was a teenager she also became influenced by hip-hop and punk as well. All of these elements mix together in her music almost effortlessly.

Spektor studied music in college, and around this time she began writing her own songs. She began performing in small clubs in New York City, such as the Knitting Factory and the Sidewalk Café. She self-released two albums (2001’s 11:11, and 2002’s Songs) before being signed to Sire Records in 2004. Her first album for the label, Soviet Kitsch, gained a modest amount of recognition, but her 2006 release Begin to Hope earned her a decent amount of mainstream success, and included the hit single “Fidelity.” Most recently, her song, “The Call,” was used prominently in The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian. Spektor is said to be working on a new album, expected to be released in 2009. If it’s anything like her first four albums, it will probably be really good, and will make Regina Spektor one of the decade’s most solid artists.

After thirteen years of not performing, recording, or saying much of anything, seminal alternative rock pioneers My Bloody Valentine broke their silence and played some shows in 2008. They made up for their inactivity by playing their best songs at a blistering volume, leaving audiences across the globe completely mesmerized.

Lead by guitar maestro Kevin Shields, the band was formed in Dublin in 1984, and were the penultimate band in the “shoegazing” movement in Britain. Shields wrote pop songs layered with guitar effects and feedback, almost like a more dreamy Velvet Underground. With the addition of Bilinda Butcher on vocals in 1987, the band began to make a name for themselves. However, they only released two full-length albums (1988’s Isn’t Anything, and 1991’s masterpiece Loveless) before they went on a hiatus. The sessions for Loveless dragged for two years and nearly bankrupted their record label. This created tensions within the band, and put a strain on Kevin Shields, the band’s main songwriter and ardent perfectionist.

No, this is not a profile about Ted Nugent! This is also not a tribute to the late 70s De Niro masterpiece (that I still have not seen all of yet). This is about a band called Deerhunter from Atlanta that formed in 2001, by vocalist/guitarist Bradford Cox, and keyboardist/drummer, Moses Archuleta and they describe themselves as "ambient punk." They mix a variety of sounds, such as ambient, art-rock, noise and post-punk.

For a few years, they honed their sound, and went through several band members (including their original bass player, Justin Bosworth, who died tragically in 2004) before releasing their first album, Turn It Up Faggot!, in the summer of 2005. The band garnered critical acclaim with their 2007 release, Crytograms, a potent mix of reverberated guitars, tape loops, and solid songwriting. In the autumn of 2007, longtime guitarist Colin Mee exited the band after he felt the band was becoming too exposed, and was replaced by Whitney Petty. Bassist Josh Fauver, and guitarist Lockett Pundt round out the band’s current line-up.

After fourteen years, eleven band members, and 13 million dollars, Guns N' Roses is slated to release their long-awaited album, Chinese Democracy, right in time for Thanksgiving. Geffen Records confirmed that the record would, at long last, be released on November 23 in the United States. Axl Rose's long-awaited "opus" will be the first release of exclusively new material by the trademark Guns N' Roses since 1993's The Spaghetti Incident.

Guess who could care less? Me. Five years ago, I’ll admit it, I was eager for the completion of this Chinese Democracy record, having been a Guns N' Roses fan since I was 4 in 1989. Every year that seemed to go by, Axl Rose kept saying "It's almost done." If he said this in 2002, and the record was not released until 2008, six years still to go does not mean that it's almost done. Since then, my tastes have gravitated away from classic rock and big-ego rockstars, such as Rose, and I just don’t care anymore. Plus, the record has none of the original band members (sans Rose), and you just can't have a GNR record without Slash, his top hat, his mop of black hair, and his trademark guitar sound. Give me the first half of Appetite for Destruction, and maybe nine or ten songs from the bloated Use Your Illusion double album, and that's all the GNR I'll ever need!
