Excel Skills: Words and Letter to Upper Case and Lower Case Macro Formula

I was messing around deleting first or last words in Excel. But now I want to edit those words so they are either all upper case, all lower case or in "proper format" (first letter upper case, subsequent letters lower case). So the plan is to find a formula or a macro to do this all automagically so I wouldn't need to go into each individual cell editing each one. Here is the code you are after:

THIS IS THE FORMULA MACRO CODE IF YOU WANT TO CHANGE ALL THE LETTERS OF YOUR EXCEL CELL INTO UPPERCASE LETTERS:

=UPPER(Cell)

this is the formula macro code if you want to change all the letters of your excel cell into lowercase letters:

=LOWER(Cell)

This Is The Formula Macro Code If You Want To Change All The Letters Of Your Excel Cell Into Uppercase Letters:

=PROPER(Cell)

Excel: How to Delete The First or Last Word

I was looking at maintaining some excel databases and I needed to delete the first word from every row in a certain column in Microsft Excel. I imagined myself going through every cell and deleting the dratted word but I thought a macro could do that. Better yet there is an excel formula which you can program to get Excel to delete and remove the first word from a cell column/row or even the last word depending on what you need:

Code for deleting the first word in a cell in Excel:

=RIGHT(C2,LEN(C2)-FIND(" ",C2))

Code for deleting the last word in a cell in Excel:

=LEFT(C2,LEN(C1)-2)

Safe Ab Exercises

Today I'm writing about safe ab exercises: I usually don't write much about sports, exercise or fitness on this blog (other than tae kwon do, rockclimbing, cycling and running) so its about time I write about something... I was reading an article on the New York Times Blogs about exercising your abs. The question posed by the article was "Is Your Ab Workout Hurting Your Back?" I remember doing sit-ups in the past and it absolutely hurt my back. Rather than being peer pressured into doing them I chose to sit out of it. The traditional sit-up exercise may be good for the abdominal muscles but dangerous for the back. The article states the dilemma: "But there’s growing dissent among sports scientists about whether all of this attention to the deep abdominal muscles actually gives you a more powerful core and a stronger back and whether it’s evensafe."

Hidden Swearing in Music

I was listening to "The Script" album on my ipod when it started playing "If You See Kay". I didn't think of it much until the second time around when I thought - wait a sec - that sounds like they were spelling out F-U-C-K in their chorus. And this phenomenon is not new. A few other bands have played with "hidden swearing" in their music and lyrics by using "If you See Kay". Other bands who have used it include: 2005 Norwegian punk band Turbonegro, 1990 pop-punk band Poster Children, 1982 Canadian band April Wine, 1977 lo-fi pioneer R. Stevie Moore and finally in 1963 Memphis Slim. The funny thing is even Shakespeare played with the concept.

If you see Kay
Will you tell her that I love her
And if you see Kay
Let her know I want her back
If she listens, say that I'm missing
Everything about her
Make sure you say
Im sweet FA without her
If you see Kay

Diligence and Frugality: Chairman Mao

Chairman Mao was a fan of practising diligence and frugality for China. He preached back in 1955 that to make China prosperous and successful it would take several decades of diligence and frugality. And now with perseverance China has made it. 50 years down the track China has become a superpower. China holds many of USA's bonds and currency. China has such a strong financial grasp over USA now that commentators are dubbing the relationship as "Chimerica". The amazing relationship between a big spender (USA) and a big saver (China). Being frugal at a macroeconomic scale has brought rewards to China in the long run. For individuals, would you have the same level of perseverance, diligence and frugality to succeed financially?

Diligence and frugality should be practised in running factories and shops and all state-owned, co-operative and other enterprises. The principle of diligence and frugality should be observed in everything. This principle of economy is one of the basic principles of socialist economics. China is a big country, but she is still very poor. It will take several decades to make China prosperous. Even then we will still have to observe the principle of diligence and frugality. But it is in the coming few decades, during the present series of five-year plans, that we must particularly advocate diligence and frugality, that we must pay special attention to economy. The Bird, Bird, Bird, the Bird is the Word

I know this is old but still can't get enough of "the bird bird bird, the bird is the word" - the real song name is: "Surfin' Bird" sung by "The Trashman". Never heard of the song until it got featured in "The Family Guy" in the episode "I dream of Jesus".

Surfin'Bird (aka Bird is the Word) Videos

Here's the video of "Bird is the Word" from Family guy:

Peter: Brian, can I see that paper for a sec? [Brian hands him the paper] Huh, that's odd. I thought that would be big news.
Brian: You thought what would be big news?
Peter: Well, there seems to be an absence of a certain ornithological piece. A headline regarding mass awareness of a certain avian variety.
Brian: What are you talking about?
Peter: Oh, have you not heard? It was my understanding that everyone had heard...
Brian: Heard what?
Stewie: Brian, don't! [Peter puts the record on and starts dancing and singing]

Saving Pennies: Frugal Budget Setting

Smart financial planning is important when living frugally. In this post we shall look at how to save pennies by setting up a frugal budget plan. A lot of "common sense" ideas here, but with many families and individuals in financial trouble - "common sense" is not so common after all.

Frugal Budget Plan

For couples: A smart frugal method to financial planning is to learn how to live on a single income. You may both work for a living, but when you both do the sums, its a smart move to make an effort to be able to live on a single income. This is to safeguard your family against any adverse effects such as losing a job. The second job would then pay for savings, investments and other luxuries and extras.

For Everyone: In your frugal budget plan you must implement an emergency fund for yourself or your family. This should be over and above your insurance (as we all know we can't rely on insurance - just look at what happened in New Orleans with Hurricane Katrina). Set aside some money for a rainy day, in case of job losses.

What is Frugal Living? Spend Less, Use Less, Waste Less

What does "frugal" mean? It means being economical and avoiding waste. "Practicing or marked by economy, as in the expenditure of money or the use of material resources; or "economical in the use of money or resources; thrifty". Frugality and the art of frugal living is the:

  1. acquiring goods and services in a restrained manner, and
  2. resourcefully using already owned economic goods and services, to
  3. achieve a longer term goal.

As Wikipedia puts it: "Common strategies of frugality include the reduction of waste, curbing costly habits, suppressing instant gratification by means of fiscal self-restraint, seeking efficiency, avoiding traps, defying expensive social norms, embracing free (as in gratis) options, using barter, and staying well-informed about local circumstances and both market and product/service realities."

Personally, frugal living means being smarter with money management (budgeting in advance how mu

What Does "Take With a Pinch of Salt" mean?

I was reading a few forums about learning about "money making" schemes and gurus and one forum member advised to take their advice "with a pinch of salt." To take (advice) with a pinch of salt means: to listen to a story or an explanation with considerable doubt or to take a story and not completely believing in it and refusing to believe it is completely true. Where does this idiom come from? In Pliny’s Naturalis Historia, 77 A.D. he writes:

After the defeat of that mighty monarch, Mithridates, Gnaeus Pompeius found in his private cabinet a recipe for an antidote in his own handwriting; it was to the following effect: Take two dried walnuts, two figs, and twenty leaves of rue; pound them all together, with the addition of a grain of salt; if a person takes this mixture fasting, he will be proof against all poisons for that day.

More recently, John Trapp wrote in "Commentary on the Old and New Testaments", 1647:

"This is to be taken with a grain of salt."

Martial Arts: Brutal Chinese Fight Scene

I've always been a fan of martial arts... there was an interesting series on TV called Fight School (But I can't find any downloadable episodes of that series) and check out some Tae Kwon Do One Step Sparring. Watch these two brutal Chinese movie fight scenes:

Motivational Poster: Sexy Butt

There are plenty of spoof motivational posters out there, some websites even claim to have 53,000 of them! But a "good" one is a rarity, most are unfunny, crude, rude and tacky. This motivational poster makes you look twice. (!) Is it a Sexy Butt or are they a pair of sexy heels?

Natalie Portman

Natalie Portman or in Hebrew: נטלי פורטמן‎ was born as Natalie Hershlag in Jerusalem on June 9, 1981 and is an Israeli American actress. I remember seeing her for the first time on Léon (aka the Professional) starring alongside Jean Reno when she was only 13 years old. She is more widely known for the role as Padmé Amidala in the Star Wars prequel trilogy. She was also quoted as saying that she would "...rather be smart than be a movie star," completed a bachelor's degree in psychology at Harvard College while she was working on the Star Wars films. Portman has been a vegetarian since childhood and is an advocate for animal rights. She does not eat animal products or wear fur, feathers, or leather. "All of my shoes are from Target and Stella McCartney," she says. On the concept of the afterlife, she comments: "I don't believe in that. I believe this is it, and I believe it's the best way to live." Enjoy the high resolution photos or Miss Portman below!

What does the Colour of My Phlegm Mean?

Thankfully I've recovered quite quickly from my flu (even more thankful that it wasn't of the swine variety). What is phlegm? Thick, sticky, stringy mucus secreted by the mucous membrane of the respiratory tract, as during a cold or other respiratory infection. What does clear phlegm mean? What does cloudy white phlegm mean? What does yellow phlegm mean? What does green phlegm mean?

Phlegm Colour

Here are the meanings to certain phlegm colours:

  • Clear or White Phlegm = healthy; inital stage of common flu has clear phlegm and can be most infectious
  • Yellow Phlegm = A sign that your immune system is responding to the attack. It may be a sign of a bacterial infection - hence doctors may prescribe an antibiotic.
  • Greenish Phlegm is a sign of infection. Rusty spots may indicate pnuemonia or internal bleedings.
