National Ice Cream Day

President Ronald Reagan designated July as National Ice Cream Month in 1984 and the third Sunday of the month was proclaimed as National Ice Cream Day. This is due to the fact that President Reagan recognized ice cream as a fun and nutritious food that is enjoyed by a full 90% of the nation's population. During such proclamation, President Reagan called for all people of the United States to observe these events with "appropriate ceremonies and activities."

The proclamation was very much supported by The International Ice Cream Association (IICA) who encourages retailers and consumers to celebrate July as National Ice Cream Month.

The U.S. ice cream industry generates more than $21 billion in annual sales and provides jobs for thousands of U.S. citizens. About 9% of all the milk produced by U.S. dairy farmers is used to produce ice cream, contributing significantly to the economic well-being of the nation's dairy industry. So aside from being very delicious, ice cream also has other benefits particularly to a nation's economy.

Tour de France Stage 15

Stage 15 of the Tour de France stage 15 was dominated and won by Spaniard Alberto Contador who wears the yellow jersey, one minute and 37 seconds ahead of Astana team mate Lance Armstrong in second. In this cycling race, the breakaway in the 207.5km stage 15 from Pontarlier to Verbier came in dribs and drabs, which was started by Frenchman David Moncoutié (Cofidis team) after 42km, joined by Italian Franco Pellizotti (Team Liquigas), then six others, then another four, and then another three for a total of 15.

Spaniard Mikel Astarloza of Euskaltel, one of the three in that last mini-group, was the virtual leader on the course when the breakaway’s time gap rose almost a minute above his three-minute deficit to Rinaldo Nocentini in Tour de France Stage 15 cycle race. Team Astana gradually lessened the gap and the breakaway was caught with six kilometres to go, which was then the time for Frank Schleck and then Contador to attack. However, Lance Armstrong did not respond to Contador, and eventually lost 94 seconds on his Astana team mate.

Leonard Bernstein

Leonard Bernstein was born on August 25, 1918 in Lawrence, Massachusetts to a Russian Jewish family. His grandmother insisted that his first name be Louis, but his parents always liked to call him Leonard. Bernstein's father initially opposed to his interest in music. Despite this, his grandmother frequently took him to orchestra concerts. Bernstein, at a very young age listened to piano performances and was immediately captivated so he subsequently began learning the piano.

During his teenage years, Leonard's enthusiasm for music exploded. He staged amateur operas, dabbled at composition, and played on a radio show sponsored by his father's beauty supply company, a harbinger of the broad scope of his future professional activity. He became particularly adept at improvising variations in the styles of various classical and pop composers. Lennny, as what people sometimes call him, practiced the piano voraciously at all hours of the night. However, he was rather the type of player with a spontaneous outburst of the sheer joy of playing and invention.

F15e Crash Afghanistan

An American F-15E jet crashed in eastern region of Afghanistan on Saturday, killing two crewmembers aboard the plane, the US military said in a statement. The F-15E crashed at approximately 3:15 A.M. Kabul time while it was conducting coalition operations. The military officials said that the crash of the fighter plane was caused by some mechanical problems, ruling out the possibility of hostile fire at the jet. The F15e crash in Afghanistan occurred after a U.S. helicopter was shot down by Taliban insurgents in the restive southern province of Helmand on Tuesday. At least five people were killed in the attack. (The photo above is a file photo is a 15E crash in England in which the crew survived the crash).

Two crew members died when an F-15E fighter plane assigned to Seymour Johnson Air Force Base in Goldsboro crashed in eastern Afghanistan Friday night. The crash of the F-15E came in a month that has already proved the deadliest for Western troops in the course of the nearly 8-year-old Afghanistan conflict. At least 50 coalition service members, including 26 Americans, have been killed so far in July. The highest previous monthly tally for Western troop fatalities in Afghanistan was 46. No fighter jets have crashed in Afghanistan in years. Militants are able to shoot down helicopters with rockets, but are not known to have the anti-aircraft weaponry necessary to bring down a high-flying jet.

How to Build a Laptop Tray for Your Car

I love reading about DIY (Do-it-yourself) projects. In this project Michael Davis built his own laptop tray for his car. In his creative but “ghetto” idea he created a laptop tray out of PVC piping, wooden boards and a little ingenuity and hard work. Why did he do it? Davis does a lot of travelling in his car and travels to many estate sales and auctions. He also often brings along his laptop to keep in touch, and to check what things are worth before buying them at estate sales, yard sales or bidding in auctions. Michael Davis has a broadband access card for his laptop, so he can get online from anywhere.

Davis had always wanted a built-in laptop / notebook computer tray for his car. The commercially made units are pricey and through a little research he found that several models cost close to $300.

Focus

When words become unclear, I shall focus with photographs. When images become inadequate, I shall be content with silence.

Focus Quote

One reason so few of us achieve what we truly want is that we never direct our focus; we never concentrate our power. Most people dabble their way through life, never deciding to master anything in particular.

Anti Paparazzi Flash for Celebrities

As Lady Gaga sings in her hit song "Paparazzi":

Got my flash on it's true
Need that picture of you
It's so magical

Someone has "invented" a new gadget for celebrities: an anti paparazzi flash gadget which fits in a purse. A photographer shooting a celebrity at night, complete with flash will find that every photo would be ruined as the flash from the anti paparazzi device will blind the camera's CCD sensors. There are still bigs in the "invention".
