I envy the kids who watch TV documentaries on daytime TV. Fortunately I'm a university student, so I have all the time in the world to watch tv. (Yeah I wish - actually I have zip time right now because of the pre-labs i have to work through) Anyway, I was having an especially late breakfast at around 11am - could be called brunch but who cares... and I switched on the television to find this interesting doco on the ABC about Air Assaults conducted by the army and marines from World War II. it was a documentary series called "Battle Plan" and the other week they featured "Naval Assaults" and that was another interesting episode in itself. Anyway, this one episode in particular was detailing the battle plan for Operation Market Garden that was executed in World War II in Germany. The operation had a few successes, but was an overall failure.
What kept me glued to the screen was that some of the place names seemed familiar. Not that I was alive during World War II, but after the battle plan graphic was shown on the TV and the plot line was starting to sound familiar, it came back to me. This actual military operation was made into a film called "A Bridge Too Far" (I think) and it had an all star cast, including Sean Connery. It was just elements of the movie that I remembered - the events that contributed to the failure like the battle plans of the assault being retrieved by the enemy from one of the landing sites and reinforcements falling behind schedule due to difficulties into getting proper resources into position. The other striking fact of the operation that I remembered from the movie was how reinforcements - such as more artillery and food and other medical supplies were being dropped in a certain field. But the thing was, because the Germans had staked out the place since they had the plans, the Allied forces couldn't retrieve the precious supply drops. The on striking scene of this event in the movie was when the people were becoming desperate and one person becoma desperate and ran to get the supply box. Running back he was shot in the back, but the supply box we was carrying, dropped and broke open the reveal a box full of army berets.
